At the same time, Holbrook was named the No. 1 Jaycee president in the state and was nominated for the Kulp Award, which distinguishes her among the top Jaycee presidents in the nation. In addition to her efforts for the Jaycees, Holbrook has done work for Carousel Ranch, Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund and the local chapter of her sorority’s alumni association. Through the Jaycees, she has assisted Single Mothers Outreach, the SCV Boys & Girls Club, Child and Family Center and other local service organizations. Before Holbrook was announced as the Carmen Sarro Award winner, a Zonta member introduced each of the 10 nominees and saluted the organizations that nominated them. Event co-chairs Chris Miller, Cheryl Gray and Suzanne Alziebler introduced each honoree and presented them with a yellow rose, the symbol of Zonta International. The nine women saluted in addition to Holbrook and their nominating organizations were Diane Bartley, American Association of University Women; Barbara D. Florentine, American Cancer Society; Jordana Capra, Circle of Hope; Patty Kelly, Friends of the Libraries of the SCV; Lucile Novak, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; Donna Waddell, Newhall Memorial Health Foundation Guild; Ingrid Brown, Pet Assistance Foundation; Courtney Kanagi, Safe Rides of SCV; and Kris Hough, Soroptimist International of the Santa Clarita Valley. Zonta is an international organization of professionals dedicated to improving the status of women worldwide. In addition to the Status of Women brunch, the local Zonta chapter sponsors the Healthy Kids Club for at-risk young women from Val Verde; Healthy Women’s Day free health screenings for uninsured women; and Rent-A-Santa each Christmas. SANTA CLARITA – Debbie Holbrook has developed her leadership skills through the mentorship of the SCV Jaycees, so it is appropriate that the Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley has named Holbrook the winner of the annual Carmen Sarro Award for Improving the Status of Women Through Community Service. The award is named for Carmen Sarro, a founding Zonta member who lost a battle with cancer several years ago. Holbrook received the award March 18 as the highlight of Zonta’s annual Status of Women Celebration. She was one of 10 women nominated for the award by service organizations throughout the Santa Clarita Valley and honored at the brunch program. Holbrook joined the Jaycees in 2002, became membership vice president and was elected president in 2005. Under her leadership, membership in the local Jaycees grew from 30 members to nearly 90 members. last_img read more
