Ronaldo is no egomaniac, says Hargreaves

first_img Over the course of a remarkable career, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner has faced accusations of being selfish and caring more about his own end product than that of the wider collective. His stunning exploits have made it difficult to argue against his approach, with comparisons being made to Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan when it comes to demanding nothing less than perfection. Hargreaves, though, feels that Ronaldo can sometimes be portrayed in an unfavourable light. For him, the 35-year-old is merely willing to be the main man if those around him have no desire to take on such a role. He is, however, able to spot “if you’re good at something” and will happily pass on responsibility to those who prove themselves deserving of sharing what can be a heavy load. Hargreaves, who tasted Champions League success alongside Ronaldo when United edged out Chelsea on penalties in 2008, told beIN Sports on how he was able to take on set-piece duty at times: “Ask politely, like anything. But to be fair we used to practice all the time and he knew I could take them. “We used to practice all the time and Cristiano knew I could (score them) and I love that about him. Cristiano Ronaldo is famed for his relentless pursuit of perfection, but former Manchester United team-mate, Owen Hargreaves, says the Portuguese is no “egomaniac” and more of a team player than many give him credit for. “I remember we played, I’d scored a couple, and we practiced before the Champions League final against Chelsea that year, he was on one side of the box and I was on the other. “I hit nine out of ten into the top corner and Edwin van der Sar was in goal. “And Edwin came to me and said, ‘Owen, if we get a free-kick in the Champions League final you’ve got to take it’. “I said, ‘I can’t take it off Cristiano, that’s Cristiano Ronaldo’. “Anyway, we get to the dressing room, we’re warming up to go out on the pitch before we go out, nobody is around, Cristiano walks over and says, ‘Owen if we get a free-kick today it’s yours, I saw you practising’. read also:Bonucci defends Ronaldo: Even the greatest miss penalties “That’s who he was. Everybody thinks he’s like it’s all about him and an egomaniac. But if you’re good at something he’s the first one to see that. “And that’s why I got to take a couple that year because he knew I might score. I admire that about him, I really do.” Ronaldo found the target in a memorable European clash with Chelsea in Moscow, but would miss his penalty in the shootout and relied on others – such as Hargreaves and Van der Sar – to deliver him the first of his five Champions League crowns. Arthur backs Pakistan to mount World Cup challenge

first_imgMICKEY Arthur believes Pakistan can “go all the way” in the Cricket World Cup despite their one-day international slump.Pakistan were whitewashed 5-0 by Australia in the United Arab Emirates following a 3-2 series defeat to South Africa. There are also concerns that leg-spinner Shadab Khan could miss the World Cup after he was ruled out of the ODI series against England next month due to a virus.Yet coach Arthur feels Pakistan can achieve more glory in England and Wales, two years after winning the ICC Champions Trophy.Speaking at a news conference before Pakistan’s departure for England, Arthur said: “We leave very, very well prepared.“We leave with a team that has both the talent and attitude to be successful. Our preparation over here has been outstanding, and our preparation leading into the World Cup is brilliant with a series against the world number one side in their own conditions.“That will give us an opportunity to test ourselves and to test our combination, and to head to the World Cup with a lot of confidence. We know if we play to our potential, we have the ability to go all the way.”Arthur has challenged Yasir Shah – who was not included in the World Cup squad – to grasp his opportunity to face England in the absence of Shadab.“We wanted a wrist-spinner (for the England series),” Arthur said. “Wrist-spinners are in vogue in cricket at the moment, all teams have good wrist-spinners.“The key for Yasir is to challenge both edges. If Yasir challenges both inside and outside edges of the bat, he becomes a different beast. If he only challenges the outside edge, players can line him up and hit him one side of the ground.“That means he has to bowl his googly more often. In the UAE, the wickets were especially flat and didn’t turn. If we get on a wicket that just grips a little bit, Yasir is a bowler we still feel can be a weapon for us. But time will tell on whether we decide to pick him for the final World Cup squad.”last_img read more

Hampshire and Yorkshire score opening wins at County Finals

first_img23 Sep 2016 Hampshire and Yorkshire score opening wins at County Finals Hampshire and Yorkshire took the honours on a birdie-strewn first day of the English Men’s County Championship at Sandwell Park Golf Club in Staffordshire.Hampshire – who received good luck wishes from former team-member Justin Rose – beat Cornwall 5-4, while Yorkshire defeated Warwickshire 7-2The action on the first day of the round robin tournament unfolded on a bright autumn day, with many of the holes being decided by birdies. Both winning teams took the upper hand in the morning foursomes with Hampshire winning two of their three games and Yorkshire completing a clean sweep with a combined team score of 15-under par.In the singles Hampshire, playing in the top match, claimed their first point with the 3/1 win of Billy McKenzie. He was quickly followed by Jordan Sundborg who took charge of his game when he won the 9th, 11th, 12th and 14th. He had been a couple down over the opening holes but, helped by some birdies, came out of that stretch three up and also closed out his match 3/1. “I played really well from the 7th and got a bit of momentum going,” he said.Team captain Martin Young gave Hampshire the win with his 4/3 victory and was two-under when he finished. His round got off to a good start when he holed a long par putt to halve the first and, as he moved into gear, he won five holes in a row to reach the turn five up.He’s suffering from a heavy cold and said: “Because I’m feeling a bit rough I played within myself, drove the ball well and hit it straight.” He went on: “I’m so pleased we have won and really pleased that the points have been shared out among the players.”Hampshire, which includes the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands, is fielding a young team which includes four rookies at County Finals. Young, by contrast, is playing in his seventh final and still waiting for a win! The last time Hampshire won this championship was in 1996 when Olympic champion Justin Rose was in the team.He sent a video good-luck message to the side saying: “Go out and give it 100%, I am sure you will wear the badge well.”In the day’s other match, Yorkshire laid the foundations of their win with their 3-0 foursomes success, before Steve Robins and Ben Hutchinson (pictured top)  forged ahead in the singles to clinch the victory.Robins, who insisted he wasn’t playing his best, managed to score in style. He won five holes in a row from the eighth – helped with three birdies – before closing out his game on the 15thHutchinson grabbed the initiative straight away in his game and was four up after four and five up at the turn. He was three-under going out and, although he didn’t putt as well on the back nine, he won 3/2 to ensure Yorkshire’s point. “It was the winning point and that’s what counts,” he said. His team-mates weren’t finished, although Warwickshire made them work for their points. Warwickshire’s Patrick Ruff, who was two down at the turn, took English amateur champion Dan Brown to the 18th and their game was halved. Warwickshire’s Matt Cryer had 16 pars and two birdies in his game, got ahead of Will Whiteoak on the 15th and their game also went to a halved result.Liam Phipps took a point for Warwickshire with his 3/1 result, but Kealan Lowe, the Yorkshire order of merit winner, completed the team’s 7-2 scoreline when he won the last game 2/1.Yorkshire captain Darryl Berry said: “It’s been a very good day’s work. I’m happy with the way they played and it’s a deserved win. They have stuck to what they had to do and their attitude has been brilliant. They’re all up for it!”Tomorrow Hampshire play Warwickshire and Yorkshire play Cornwall.Click here for tee times and full scoringImage copyright Leaderboard Photography.last_img read more

For the first time in history of UEFA Champions League, all 16 teams entering the knockout stage come from one of Europe’s top-five leagues as there will be no minnows taking part in march to the final in Istanbul. Let’s have a look at the top teams and what they have in store for us this week.Advertisement Atletico Madrid vs Liverpool F.C. – Liverpool FC will visit the scene of their latest conquest, Metropolitano, where they won their 6th UEFA Champions League title, in the first leg of their last-16 clash against the defensive powerhouse Atletico Madrid. While they both play at seemingly opposite ends of the footballing-style spectrum, i.e. “heavy metal scoring” vs “defend defend defend”, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid share some similarities as they both play with an intensity that is hard to match. The teams have not met since the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League semi-finals but a lot has changed in the decade.Watch Atletico Madrid vs Liverpool F.C. Live and Exclusive on SONY TEN 2 and SONY TEN 2 HD on 19th February 2020 at 1.30 am (IST) Advertisement Borussia Dortmund vs Paris Saint Germain – Borussia Dortmund are one of the most exciting teams in European football right now, with a crop of talented youngsters driving their pursuit of a place in the latter stages of the Champions League. On the other side, PSG are a group of hyper-focused players who will go leaps and bounds to secure the one piece of silverware that has long eluded them. PSG come into this tie having won all but one of their six games in this season’s group stage while Dortmund has surprisingly steered through the group of death having picked up ten points in this season’s group stage to finish second behind Barcelona FC and eliminating Inter Milan. This clash truly paves way for the future stars like Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho, Achraf Hakimi, and Kylian Mbappe to mark their stamp in this prestigious competition and take over the mantle from Messi and Ronaldo in the decade to come.Watch Borussia Dortmund vs Paris Saint Germain Live and Exclusive on SONY TEN 1 and SONY TEN 1 HD on 19th February 2020 at 1.30 am (IST) Tottenham Hotspur F.C. vs RB Leipzig – Both these teams have undergone managerial changes this season as Julian Nagelsmann took charge of the German club last July and is in midst of propelling them to their first league title while Jose Mourinho arrived at Spurs in November and has propelled them from 14th in the League to their current fifth-place position. This match may lack the star power of Dortmund vs. PSG or Real Madrid vs. Manchester City, but will be intriguing in its own quirky ways. The German outfit are mobile, dynamic, unpredictable and extremely confident but Mourinho is well versed in tough Champions League clashes and is a tactician of the highest order. All eyes will be on Timo Werner as the German has already expressed his desire to play in the top flight of the English division while Tottenham Hotspur will miss their talisman, Harry Kane, due to the hamstring injury he suffered early this year.Watch Tottenham Hotspur F.C. vs RB Leipzig Live and Exclusive on SONY TEN 2 and SONY TEN 2 HD on 20th February 2020 at 1.30 am (IST)UEFA Champions League is among India’s most loved football tournaments and has gained increasing popularity in the last few years.
