Hampshire and Yorkshire score opening wins at County Finals

first_img23 Sep 2016 Hampshire and Yorkshire score opening wins at County Finals Hampshire and Yorkshire took the honours on a birdie-strewn first day of the English Men’s County Championship at Sandwell Park Golf Club in Staffordshire.Hampshire – who received good luck wishes from former team-member Justin Rose – beat Cornwall 5-4, while Yorkshire defeated Warwickshire 7-2The action on the first day of the round robin tournament unfolded on a bright autumn day, with many of the holes being decided by birdies. Both winning teams took the upper hand in the morning foursomes with Hampshire winning two of their three games and Yorkshire completing a clean sweep with a combined team score of 15-under par.In the singles Hampshire, playing in the top match, claimed their first point with the 3/1 win of Billy McKenzie. He was quickly followed by Jordan Sundborg who took charge of his game when he won the 9th, 11th, 12th and 14th. He had been a couple down over the opening holes but, helped by some birdies, came out of that stretch three up and also closed out his match 3/1. “I played really well from the 7th and got a bit of momentum going,” he said.Team captain Martin Young gave Hampshire the win with his 4/3 victory and was two-under when he finished. His round got off to a good start when he holed a long par putt to halve the first and, as he moved into gear, he won five holes in a row to reach the turn five up.He’s suffering from a heavy cold and said: “Because I’m feeling a bit rough I played within myself, drove the ball well and hit it straight.” He went on: “I’m so pleased we have won and really pleased that the points have been shared out among the players.”Hampshire, which includes the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands, is fielding a young team which includes four rookies at County Finals. Young, by contrast, is playing in his seventh final and still waiting for a win! The last time Hampshire won this championship was in 1996 when Olympic champion Justin Rose was in the team.He sent a video good-luck message to the side saying: “Go out and give it 100%, I am sure you will wear the badge well.”In the day’s other match, Yorkshire laid the foundations of their win with their 3-0 foursomes success, before Steve Robins and Ben Hutchinson (pictured top)  forged ahead in the singles to clinch the victory.Robins, who insisted he wasn’t playing his best, managed to score in style. He won five holes in a row from the eighth – helped with three birdies – before closing out his game on the 15thHutchinson grabbed the initiative straight away in his game and was four up after four and five up at the turn. He was three-under going out and, although he didn’t putt as well on the back nine, he won 3/2 to ensure Yorkshire’s point. “It was the winning point and that’s what counts,” he said. His team-mates weren’t finished, although Warwickshire made them work for their points. Warwickshire’s Patrick Ruff, who was two down at the turn, took English amateur champion Dan Brown to the 18th and their game was halved. Warwickshire’s Matt Cryer had 16 pars and two birdies in his game, got ahead of Will Whiteoak on the 15th and their game also went to a halved result.Liam Phipps took a point for Warwickshire with his 3/1 result, but Kealan Lowe, the Yorkshire order of merit winner, completed the team’s 7-2 scoreline when he won the last game 2/1.Yorkshire captain Darryl Berry said: “It’s been a very good day’s work. I’m happy with the way they played and it’s a deserved win. They have stuck to what they had to do and their attitude has been brilliant. They’re all up for it!”Tomorrow Hampshire play Warwickshire and Yorkshire play Cornwall.Click here for tee times and full scoringImage copyright Leaderboard Photography.last_img read more

Allie…Allie…Allie…The Greatest of All Time

first_imgNo, not that Ali, but the achievements and accomplishments are no less amazing. This is Charles “Buddy” Allie of whom I speak. Allie is quite possibly one of the most dominant USA Masters Track and Field Champions in Pittsburgh, nationally, and for that matter, the world. Having just turned the young age of “65,” Allie rejoiced at a grand celebration at the Radisson hotel atop a brand new “Harley,” which he sprung for himself, that brought the house down for his three hundred plus family and friends in attendance. Prior to the event “Buddy” was ranked number one (1) in the world in the 60 — 64 age group in all of his running events, the 60, 100, 200, and 400 meters. (Karl Lewis who?) And he has competed in International World Championship Meets in Spain, Italy, England, France, Puerto Rico and Australia, just to name a few. He currently holds three World Records and one American Record. If that’s not enough (and trust me you can never get enough for track stars, they can go all day) in 2005 he was elected to the USA Masters Track and Field Hall of Fame and was selected USA Masters Track Athlete of the Year for his age group in 2008, 2009, and 2010.By now I know most of you are reasonably impressed. Not that Buddy expects that of you. He is one of the most quiet, unassuming superstars of his trade. As a matter of fact you could be in a room with him for “65” hours and you would never know he was a track phenom. That said, allow me to put this in some perspective for you. After turning “65” at a Potomac Valley Track Club Meet earlier this year, Allie shattered world records in the 200 and 400 meters with unbelievable times of 24.85 and 56.28; besting listed world records of 25.20 by American great Steve Robbins in 2008 and 56.37 by German legend Guido Mueller in 2004. (For all you now old and almost dead ex-city league track stars that means “Mr. Allie” is still kickin’ some world class butt while you’re catching a jitney from point “A” to point “B”.)Now you might think the story ends here but it doesn’t, for two reasons; #1. because the story ends when I say it does … and, #2 and way more importantly because with all those stats that’s not really what makes “Buddy” great. But here’s what does. He’s been a devoted husband to his beautiful and wonderful wife Jackie for “40 years” (now that’s a record for ya) a great father to Angie and B.J. A lifelong resident of Pittsburgh’s Northside, a retired middle school teacher at McNaugher, Columbus, Allegheny & Frick and girls basketball, soccer and softball coach; an Oliver High School and Hampton University Track Scholarship graduate; and not to be overlooked a well loved member of the Pittsburgh “Satin & Soul” Ballroom Dancers and the Pittsburgh “United Rays” Corvette Club. (And yep he’s the fastest there too… (oh shut-up Milton and Greg just enjoy the story). All that said he still finds time to provide leadership, support and inspiration to other senior athletes on staying fit and living a healthy life style as well as mentoring and training young athletes and special elite athletes such as world and Olympic Champion Kevin “Freight Train” Parker.Needless to say, I could continue to write about this local legend until I turn 65, which won’t be long from now, but as sure as I’m closing this chapter, “Buddy” is somewhere in the world about to break another world record … (Mama, there goes that man again!) Allie … Allie … Allie!!! MASTERS CHAMPION—Charles “Buddy” Allie, right, wins the World Masters Championship in Sacremento, Calif. in July 2011. He finished first in the 100 meters in the 60-64 age group. (Courtesy Photo) last_img read more

Action Jackson outduels Downtown Brown to take first place in City League play

TIMOTHY JACKSON #1 grabs the ball out the air for a 35 yard gain to be penalized for unsportsman like behavior for 15 yards after throwing the ball in the face of the defender. RONALD BROWN #3 QB being protected by #66 Ky’Lee Adams to complete the pass.In the fourth quarter, USO quarterback Ron Brown threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Desean Bonneau. Brown also found Bonneau for the 2-point conversion to give USO a 8-7 lead.Quarterback James Jackson had done all he could do to bring Allderdice back from a fourth quarter deficit and bring Cupples Stadium back to life.  He passed for over 100 yards and nearly rushed for 100 yards.Allderdice was trailing late in the fourth quarter 8-7 and began a drive from their own 2-yard line.  Quarterback James “Action” Jackson drove the Dragons on an 11-play, 98-yard touchdown drive to take a 15-8 led and the win and the top seed entering the league’s playoffs.  Jeremiah Hardrick bulldozed into the end zone from 2-yards out and a Timothy Jackson run completed the successful 2-point conversion. “We call it NASCAR and we practice the two-minute drill every day in practice. My team and the Jackson brothers, they have an imposing will to win,” Allderdice Coach Jerry Haslett said.  “When that happens, they bring everyone else along for the ride.“We have a bunch of kids who are winners and who don’t take lightly to losing. We have some veterans and some younger guys still learning their roles.  We’re starting to figure it out.”The Dragons have won six games in a row since opening their season with a non-league loss against Wheeling Park (W.Va.).  They have only given up 23 points against City League opponents.USO Quarterback Ron “Downtown” Brown has thrown for 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns in five games.SQUARING UP AS THE BALL IS ABOUT TO BE HIKED (Photos vy J. L. Martello) Since joining the league in 2011, USO has beaten Allderdice in five consecutive games. The Wildcats beat the Dragons in the City league championship game, 33-20, last year. The defending City League Champions were hit particularly hard by graduation but the Wildcats did not play with the execution and precision that the fans were accustomed to seeing. They entered the game averaging 40-points per game and was held to only 8-points.  Both teams combined for whopping 23 penalties and at times it looked more like flag football. In 2012 US. (University Prep, Sci-Tech, and Obama), teammate Ne’Ondre Harbour, was the victim of a Garfield shooting in which he was an innocent bystander and lost his life. On Wednesday, October 8, U.S.O. classmate Eric Young was shot to death in the Hill District.“They came out real flat. They lost two classmates.  One from the Hill and the other in East Liberty and it had to affect them,” said Ronald Brown Sr., USO quarterbacks father. “My son is taking it hard. He hates to lose. He has been that way since he was little. I told him to keep working. He doesn’t have all those senior receivers like he did last year, but everybody is getting better each week and if that continues they are going to be hard to beat by the end of the year.” JAMES JACKSON #7 QB throws down field looking for a receiver.USO (4-1) 5-game winning streak over Allderdice (6-1) came to an end Friday afternoon at Cupples Stadium.  The Dragons led by the Jackson brothers and a physical defense was able to pull off a 15-8 upset. The victory moved Allderdice into the top 20 in the state.James and Tim Jackson potential for greatness are limitless, but it’s up to them to fulfill.  James to Tim, just might be the best quarterback to receiver combination in the state.  Allderdice is very well coached and has great size and is a team who is built to win the City and a PIAA State championship. The schedule has made for an “exciting” end of the regular season by matching the city’s two most dominant teams. After a scoreless first half, quarterback James Jackson’s 1-yard touchdown run and an extra point kick by Alex Hahn gave Allderdice a 7-0 lead.last_img read more
