Where there is a cluster of drivers in a region or city with frequent traffic violation or tickets this will increase rates in that city or region.Waldo, a small city in Alachua County, had the least expensive car insurance in the state where rates totaled $1,169 or 24 percent below the state average.Copyright 2017 – Caribbean National Weekly Newslast_img read more

Jamaican youth encouraged to be more involved in reparation movement

first_imgYoung people across Jamaica are urged to be more involved in the activities of the National Council on Reparations in Jamaica.Youth will benefit in long runSpeaking at a recent Reparation Youth Conference, Youth Minister Olivia “Babsy” Grange said the movement needs the support of the nation’s youth, who will benefit in the long run.“Jamaica has always been a leader in the fight against slavery. Today, as my generation continues to lay the groundwork for the task that must be done in the restoration of African pride and development, we say to you [youth], the next generation, you must fulfill, not betray your ancestral mission,” Grange told the young people at the conference”“The mission will be left in your hands… Make a commitment that you’re going to carry on the work as the next generation,” she urged.Jamaica was first Grange reminded those gathered at the conference that Jamaica was the first Caribbean nation to establish an organization geared towards seeking reparation.“Subsequently, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), as a group, established the Commission… and we are now united and stronger in our effort to seek reparation,” she said. The minister noted that Friday, May 25, the day of the Conference, was globally recognized as African Liberation Day, and it was a time for Jamaican youth to not only celebrate with Africans, but to create a closer bond with African ancestry.“We are reminded of our mission and purpose as Africans abroad to bond spiritually and through decisive action with Africans in the homeland; to engage those who must historically bear responsibility for the underdevelopment of the African continent, and undervaluation of the African spirit, integrity and significance,” she said.Meanwhile, State Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Pearnel Charles Jr., also said the future for reparation lies in the hands of the nation’s youth.  “This is such an important conference, because it is critical to start with the youth. It is critical to make sure the youth comprehend what we are discussing, so they won’t become confused and cluttered in their minds, that they simply say, ‘We want some money’,” the state minister said. “Emancipation is something that you have to not only define and refine, but you must infuse it in your mind,” he added.Established in 2009The National Commission on Reparations was established by the Government of Jamaica in 2009 to recommend the form or forms which reparations may take, and to receive testimony from the public and from experts, with the aim of guiding a national approach to reparations.last_img read more

Actress Kerry Washington pays tribute to her Caribbean immigrant grandparents

first_img‘Scandal’ actress, Kerry Washington, on Saturday, June 30th, paid tribute to her Caribbean immigrant roots as she joined millions across the U.S. in protesting Donald Trump’s zero tolerance anti-immigration policies that has left thousands of children still separated from their parents, according to NewsAmericasNow.com.Spoke at protest rallySpeaking at the “Families Belong Together” anti-Trump rally in New York City, Washington made it clear she too had immigrant roots.“My grandparents on my mother’s side came to this country through Ellis Island in the ’30s from the Caribbean, and they came here like every immigrant, seeking better opportunities because of a lack of opportunity in their land, running from poverty, running from a place where they couldn’t fulfill a dream,” she said. “I am the fulfillment of that dream.”Washington added that her grandparents’ names are on the wall at Ellis Island “just like so many other grandparents of those who seem to have forgotten that they too are descended from immigrants.”And she insisted she wanted everyone listening to know that they “mattered.”Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy has resulted in more than 2,000 children remaining in detention centers, separated from their parents. Some as young as three are reportedly being taken to court and asked to make their case for asylum in the U.S. without their parents.Protests in over 700 communitiesThe June 30th “Families Belong Together” protests was held in over 700 communities around the country and saw thousands of all races, religion and gender come out to express their opposition against the Trumpian policies. Next steps in hope and healing in Parkland and Broward County

first_imgSurvivors of the Parkland shooting.Photograph by Peter Hapak for TIME On June 10, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) in collaboration with the Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) and the Children’s Services Council, will begin the next 15-month phase of a Comprehensive Wellness Program, which is already providing stress relief and trauma recovery to BCPS students, parents, teachers and school staff.  The June 10 – 13 training for 170 educators, clinicians, and student peer counselors, will take place at The Bonaventure Resort and Spa in Weston, Florida. Response to psychological distressFollowing the February 14, 2018, tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which took the innocent lives of 17 students and school staff, BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie and his leadership team reached out to community partners to create an effective, sustainable Districtwide response to the psychological distress that was devastating Broward’s students and their families, and staff.Superintendent Runcie and his team read about CMBMs groundbreaking use of self-care and group support during and after wars in the Balkans and Middle East. They experienced CMBM’s practical tools for rebalancing trauma-disrupted biological, psychological, and social functioning, and reviewed the papers published in peer-reviewed journals that demonstrated that the model decreases post-traumatic stress disorder by 80% in war-traumatized children and adults.Grant from Chan-Zuckerberg initiativeA grant from The Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative underwrote a year-long program for CMBM to provide BCPS with intensive wellness training for 180 clinicians, educators, parents and dedicated community members from Broward County and 130 peer-counselors at MSD. These trainings brought CMBM’s signature small groups, workshops and classroom experiences to 75% of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High students and to several thousand students, family members and teachers throughout the county. One of the trainees who has led CMBM self-care groups, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High parent and mental health counselor Ellen Fox-Snider, praised the power of this process “to transform” – teachers and parents, as well as students. Research on the program confirmed their experience. Those who participated in the trainings showed statistically significant improvements in all measures, including depression, fear, hostility, guilt, sadness, fatigue and hope. In early spring 2019, the Children’s Services Council, which closely tracked CMBM’s program, committed to extending its reach in Broward County. On May 21, the Broward County School Board unanimously voted to fully fund the program. The June 10-13 training will be led by psychiatrist James S. Gordon, M.D., CMBM’s founder and executive director. For Dr. Gordon, who is also a clinical professor at Georgetown Medical School, the work in Parkland and Broward is “a beacon of hope and a tribute to Robert Runcie’s vision of social-emotional learning as well as trauma recovery. This is foundational education,” Dr. Gordon stressed, “it should be an integral part of the school experience of every student everywhere.”“There is,” he observed, “a sign in a courtyard at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, a Nelson Mandela quote urging students to ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’ That is the hope of the people in Broward County,” Dr. Gordon concluded, “what we’re working to help them make a reality.”last_img read more

J$161 Million in Assets for Prime Minister Andrew Holness

first_imgKINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Integrity Commission has released the statutory declaration submitted by Prime Minister Andrew Holness showing that he and his family had an income of J$15.5 million (One Jamaica dollar=US$0.008 cents) with assets totalling over J$161.2 million. The figures also show that he has liabilities of more than J$22.2 million.“The Integrity Commission hereby certifies that the statutory declaration submitted by the declarant has been examined and is satisfied that a full declaration has been made in accordance with provision of the Act,” according to the official statement. It said that the Holness family also declared US$8,125 in income, US$28,272.11 in total assets and zero liability in US dollar. The report covers the financial health of Andrew Holness and his family for January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2018.Under the law, the Integrity Commission is mandated to annually publish in the Jamaica Gazette the summary of the statutory declarations of the prime minister and the leader of the Opposition.Opposition Leader Dr Peter Phillips’ declaration has since been published by the Commission and in a statement earlier this week, Phillips threatened to take the Integrity Commission to court for failing to provide an explanation for the delay in publishing Prime Minister Holness’ statutory declarations. In a Twitter message coinciding with the release of his statutory declaration he wrote that under his administration Jamaica now “has one of the most advanced and robust anti-corruption framework certainly in this region”.He said his administration had passed the legislation establishing the Integrity Commission and “it is still in its early stages and not perfected.Holness said that one element of the framework is the publishing of the summary financial position of the Parliamentary leaders of the country, saying “the first publishing acts as the benchmark against which future declarations can be judged.“This ensures that the country can first have knowledge of the financial position of their leaders through transparent disclosure and then overtime judge the movement of their leaders’ financial position. This will build confidence in those elected to administer public affairs”.He said the process of examining and then certifying the statutory declaration of the Parliamentary leaders “is very granular, involving queries and cross-checks” and that the “law does not require Parliamentary leaders’ declarations to be published together at the same time”.He said “though this would be ideal, it would not always be practical or possible given the current resources available to the Commission..“Furthermore, Parliamentarians do not submit their declarations to the Commission at the same time within the period 1st January to 31st March of the year following the reporting period,” he added.last_img read more
