Salah penalty completes dramatic turnaround after shock Kane opener

first_imgMIND the gap.Liverpool, operating on a different level to Tottenham when they won the Champions League, are pulling clear of the pack.4 Jordan Henderson and Mo Salah both scored as Liverpool came from behind to beat Spurs 2-1Credit: Getty ImagesThis was more of the same, recovering from Harry Kane’s first minute goal to record a 12th successive victory at Anfield.Spurs, languishing in mid-table, 16 points behind the Premier League leaders, are already out of the conversation. The chatter is all about Liverpool and their iron-will to churn out wins after Jordan Henderson and Mo Salah saw them home.Salah got the winner, drilling in a 75th minute penalty to keep Manchester City at bay, at least for another couple of games.City are chasing hard, but it is wins like this for Liverpool, dogging it out in the end, that has put them on this title-winning streak.Their biggest challenge was to find a way past Paulo Gazzaniga after his threat to stop everything coming his way. This fill-in for Hugo Lloris, crocked during their 3-0 hiding at Brighton, was taking on all-comers in the first half.Salah, Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander and Sadio Mane went every which way to try to find a way past him.He played like a trialist, flinging himself at everything as seasoned internationals smashed balls goalbound.4 Harry Kane puts Spurs ahead at Anfield after just one minuteCredit: ReutersAfter captain Kane put Spurs in to an unscripted lead 47 seconds in, it was down to Gazzaniga to weigh in with a worldie.Kane had steered in a rebound with his head, reacting quickest when Son Heung-Min’s long-ranger smacked invitingly off the upright. The dirty work had been done by Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko, with the pair heaving away in the engine room to set up the surprise chance.Kane seized on it, as shocked as anyone when he was allowed to put Spurs in to a lead they were never going to keep.At least this Harry loves the media spotlight. His adoring public wanted a piece of him and his loyal subjects in the Spurs side were soon celebrating alongside him. They knew what was to follow. For the next 89 and a bit minutes, the Premier League leaders attacked from every possible angle.Liverpool only know two speeds – fast, and very fast – after setting the pace at the head of the field.Chances came from every attack, with Gazzaniga’s double save from Salah and Firmino the pick of the first half.A Van Dijk effort was also tipped over, Alexander-Arnold’s dipper was turned away and Mane’s header was directed wide. There was no relief.4 Henderson bagged an equaliser for Liverpool in the 52nd minuteCredit: EPASissoko was booked for shoving Andy Robertson in the chest and Rose followed him when he chopped Henderson.Liverpool were out for goals and they knew that one – and then another – would soon be on the way. They survived Son’s 48th minute chance, when the Spurs man hit the bar from a tight angle after rounding Alisson.Spurs needed to score it.Four minutes later Liverpool were level after Henderson sent in the original cross from the right.Spurs failed to clear, with Fabinho popping the ball back in for Henderson to drive in the equaliser off his left boot.It is nearly four years since the captain scored at Anfield, far too long for a player coming under pressure for his place.James Milner, the Ox and Naby Keita are all vying for his spot in Liverpool’s midfield. That is to be decided on another day.The main talking point is Liverpool’s win, established when spaghetti legs Serge Aurier conceded a penalty.Something was brewing in that Spurs defence because Henderson was in over-drive down that right wing.He was operating as another forward, adding to the pressure on these tiring Tottenham defenders. In the end, the winner came from the other wing.Aurier followed Mane around the penalty area before his legs finally gave way and he upended the Liverpool forward.A minute later, when Salah finally began his bendy run-up, the league leaders went in front.Gazzaniga was unmoved, beaten in a game of bluff when Salah smacked his effort beyond the Spurs keeper. His run-up is so hard to read, emerging from a sea of red bodies on the edge of the area to pick his spot.It was his last significant touch because Liverpool’s match-winner was hobbling off with a sore ankle five minutes later. Most barely able to muster the sort of attack that could lead to an improbable equaliser. That was never likely here because Liverpool are far too good at the minute.Well, certainly too good for Tottenham.4 Spurs can save £7m by buying Lo Celso in January as clause in loan revealed

first_imgAfter an almighty goalmouth scramble, the playmaker finally turned the ball in to open the scoring in Serbia.Jose Mourinho left him on the bench in his first two games in charge – the wins over West Ham and Olympiakos – but brought him on for the final two minutes against Bournemouth on Saturday. With Dele Alli back in red-hot form under the new manager and Spurs currently outside of the top four, Lo Celso has plenty to do if he is going to convince Daniel Levy to stump up the cash to complete the permanent transfer in the New Year.2 The Argentine has scored just once – in the Champions League against Red Star Belgrade – in his nine Spurs appearancesCredit: EPAMan United vs Tottenham FREE: Live stream, TV channel and kick-off time for Premier League clash TOTTENHAM can save £7million by making Giovani Lo Celso’s transfer permanent in January. The Argentine midfielder, 23, joined Spurs on a season-long loan from Real Betis in the summer.2 Giovani Lo Celso could join Tottenham permanently in January for £7m less than his summer feeCredit: Getty Images – GettyThere is a mandatory clause in the deal which says that Spurs must sign Lo Celso permanently at the end of the campaign should they qualify for the Champions League. After an initial £15m loan fee, he would cost the North Londoners £34m next summer – but Real Betis vice-chairman Jose Catalan revealed there is a cheaper option for Spurs. He told ABC de Sevilla: “The purchase option [for Lo Celso] can be exercised by this January market.”They would have to pay €32m (£27m).”In June [a €40m permanent deal] is mandatory if they get into the Champions League, and voluntary if not.”They will have to make the decision whether they buy or not.”Things have not quite gone to plan so far for the Argentine since arriving under compatriot Mauricio Pochettino on deadline day.Seen as a long-term successor to wantaway man Christian Eriksen, he has featured just nine times in all competitions but missed more than seven weeks of action due to a hip injury sustained on international duty in early September.Lo Celso’s only goal for the club so far came on November 6 when he bagged in the 4-0 win away at Red Star Belgrade.last_img read more

first_imgGARETH BALE’S agent believes the Welshman will snub a transfer back to Tottenham, even when his Real Madrid contract expires. The winger, 30, is tied down until the summer of 2022 as he continues to pocket a staggering £600,000 per week – although Zinedine Zidane is unlikely to offer him an extension.1 Gareth Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett does not expect his client to return to Tottenham when he leaves Real MadridCredit: Getty – ContributorBut Bale’s representative Jonathan Barnett does not reckon a return to White Hart Lane would be on the cards for his client. His huge wage demands will price most clubs out of a move while the Wales international is settled – alongside his three children with childhood sweetheart Emma Rhys-Jones – in the Spanish capital.Quizzed on a potential transfer taking Bale back to Spurs, Barnett told talkSPORT: “I don’t think so, no.
