Netflix adds Buy now button kind of

first_imgAn unusual development popped up today on the Netflix page of one of the finest films ever, Little Fockers. A “Buy now” link appeared, which was a surprise to many of us, since Netflix has been outspokenly adamant about keeping its business model strictly rental only.Discovered by Hackingnetflix.com, the “Buy now” link doesn’t send the user to a Netflix purchasing page. Instead, it sends you to the official Little Fockers website where you can buy the film from the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Best Buy, Target, or Walmart. You can also download it digitally. The site boasts that you can get it there “28 days before Netflix or Redbox.”Hollywood studio executives have been supposedly offering Netflix better deals for streaming licenses if the rental company agrees to give subscribers the option to buy films through its site. Netflix continues to refuse and is standing strong by its rental-only business model.Could the Little Fockers link mean Netflix will be incorporating this strategy into more of its movies? The company doesn’t have to get messy with handling transactions. Instead, it lets the other guys do the work and reaps the benefits (presumably some cut of the sale, and/or looser licensing rules). The small link isn’t bothersome at all, and there are no annoying pop-up ads asking if we’d like to buy the movie. So, this might be a good way for Netflix to get more access to streaming more content while still sticking to its rent-only model. This may be just one of the many changes we see from Netflix in the future. For example, we know Netflix is paving the way for online streaming video sites with the recent news of a Netflix-exclusive original series. Directed by David Fincher, House of Cards will be coming in late 2012 and will star Kevin Spacey.Read more at hackingnetflix.com, via CNET.last_img read more

Bethesda and Arkane announce Dishonored

first_imgPublisher Bethesda issued a press release today to announce Dishonored, a stealth action shooter from its subsidiary Arkane Studios for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.The project will fall under the leadership of two co-creative directors, Raphael Colantonio (Arkane co-founder and lead designer on 2002 shooter Arx Fatalis) and Harvey Smith (designer on the Deus Ex series) and will release in 2012.AdChoices广告The game is a stealth-centric FPS, allowing for infiltration into mansions and barracks, assassinations using a variety of traps, and a morality system where players’ choices affect the world.Print mag Game Informer was given the exclusive and the concept art above is the magazine’s August cover. It shows a dystopian city vaguely reminiscent of Half-Life 2‘s City 17. That’s no coincidence. Viktor Antonov, a former Valve designer credited with the creation of City 17, is also on the Arkane team.Dishonored is the studio’s first game since being acquired by Bethesda last year.Read more at Game InformerBlake’s OpinionSo far, so promising. Legions of Deus Ex fans, this writer included, have longed for more games bearing that blissful combination of FPS gameplay and RPG narrative, leveling, and specialization. Few games in the last decade have scratched that itch, although players may count Arx Fatalis or Bethesda’s own Elder Scrolls series among that select few.More often than not, however, true-blue DE lovers have had their hopes raised only to be disappointed. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines promised to combine that universe’s powerful grounds for an RPG with Valve’s new-at-the-time Source engine, but the game took a lot of bug-fixing work from fans to be considered playable. Deus Ex: Invisible War, the official and direct sequel, didn’t match the original in ambition or execution, and Smith (who led that project following a senior design role on the original) was an outspoken critic of the development cycle that produced Invisible War.Dishonored, then, could be as promising a spiritual successor as the upcoming Square Enix developed prequel, Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The collective pedigree of the leadership certainly has all the right pieces. With Bethesda’s own convention – QuakeCon – just around the corner, we may get some more salivating details very soon that can tell us just how high to pin our hopes this time around.last_img read more

Star Marine Infinite Ammo brings Contra to iOS

first_imgRead more at IndieGames For those of you who grew up with a NES as the console under your TV, there is a new iOS game that will bring you back to your childhood. Titled Star Marine: Infinite Ammo, the app borrows heavily from the NES classic Contra and its sequels. There is no word on whether or not the classic Konami code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A) will work to get you 30 lives, but the gameplay looks to be enough to satisfy your need to blast aliens into oblivion. From the famous scatter gun to having to hang from the ceiling while firing your weapon, the title looks to be an excellent homage to one of the most popular game franchises of the 80’s. I can remember the white-knuckled grip I had on my controller during the epic boss-battles for each level, which Star Marine looks to recreate. While I am excited about playing one of my retro favorites, the gameplay may be hindered by its controls. Using a touchscreen to control a game that is modeled to emulate a fast action experience hasn’t really been successful in the past. Running it on an iPad may give you enough space to keep your fingers from blocking the action, but I don’t see this being the case when playing the game on an iPhone. There simply isn’t enough screen real-estate for an action title like this. Still, it’s exciting to see that classic titles are influencing modern day game development. The game costs $1.99 and was released in the App Store last Thursday. You can watch the official preview trailer and a video review from Appolicious below to help decide if it’s worth a purchase.last_img read more

Watch The Quad shred baseball bats with 107000 pounds of force

first_imgFor those of you who think of baseball as not just a game, but a way of life, there is a solution for how to dispose of all the old baseball bats you have stored in your garage. We know that finding just the right bat to help you blaze your way to RBI glory is a long, ardent process that requires you to acquire a large collection of ball swatting weapons. Unfortunately, all that equipment can cause your significant other to gripe about the space it is taking up. Sure, you could just throw them away, but that wouldn’t be the best “green” solution now would it? Do yourself and the environment a favor, shred those suckers for recycling. We know just the company that can take care of them for you: SSI Shredders.Specializing in industrial shredding, SSI makes a four-shaft shredder ominously named “The Quad.” This unit is a monster that is capable of destroying things like old carpets, automobiles, steel drums, and other commercial grade waste. This thing doesn’t fool around! Pictured above is a screenshot taken from the company’s “shred of the week” video series posted on YouTube that captures The Quad in action against a large number of bats, both wooden and aluminum. The resulting carnage sees metal and wood torn apart by the massive teeth of the shredder. The unit is so powerful that some bats can be seen flying out of the hopper trying to escape their fate. For those numbers geeks out there that are wondering about specifics, I spoke with Dave Fleming from SSI to get some figures. The Quad weighs a whopping 72,000 pounds by itself, heavier when you add the power unit. The shafts create 121,000 foot-pounds of force with the shredder tips exerting 107,000 pounds on the waste to be destroyed. Each cutter on the unit weights 210 pounds giving them the strength necessary to perform. The Quad portrayed in the video below has been put into service shredding electronic devices full time. The largest items that The Quad has tackled include parts from old airplanes. Landing gear struts, avionics and fuselage pieces have all succumbed to its might. If you are in the market for an industrial shredder, The Quad is available for a mere $750,000. Pocket change, really.last_img read more

iOS inapp purchase hack nabs free content on nonjailbroken devices

first_imgOne reason Apple has never been to keen on the jailbreaking community is that there are always some folks out there that unlock their device in order to circumvent the App Store and install pirated apps. Some have also used jailbreaking as a way to avoid paying for in-app purchases while still downloading the additional content. Now it turns out that there’s another way to do that — without jailbreaking. It’s a more complex process than the average iOS user would be inclined to undertake, and it involves accepting a certificate from a Russian developer’s server (which is not something security experts generally advise doing) and modifying DNS records under Wi-Fi settings on the target iOS device. Following the steps basically creates an in-app purchase proxy and allows content to be downloaded without a valid receipt from Apple. Unsurprisingly, the developer’s server has already buckled under the additional traffic it received in the hours following the hack’s publication. The hack wasn’t 100% effective, however. Many users reported that it didn’t work in certain apps, which might have something to do with Apple’s iOS purchasing APIs. Apple has always provided a way for app publishers to validate digital receipts. However, it appears as though the decision to implement validation is left up to developers and is not yet mandated by Apple. That may change in the wake of this highly-publicized hack, of course. If this turns out to be the case, it seems strange that Apple hasn’t required receipt validation for in-app purchases all along. After all, it’s not just developers and publishers who lose out when paid content is downloaded for free. Apple misses out on its 30% cut, too.More at 9to5 Maclast_img read more

How Google Fiber will work

first_imgGoogle Fiber, the company’s long-time-coming attempt at becoming an ISP has finally been fully explained. We already knew that Google would be rolling out extremely speedy, fiber-based internet to the people of Kansas City, but little else had been confirmed. Today Google livestreamed a press conference in which all the details of Fiber were laid out. If you were excited about the project, or have been dying to see some disruption in the ISP market, then you are in for a treat.Starting offGoogle Fiber is going to kick off in Kansas City. They company has been vague about where and when it will actually start, but now we know that the city be being broken down into “fiberhoods”. Residents of each of these areas can preregister for Google Fiber, for $10, and once they hit a critical mass (about 40-80 homes) they will be approved for installation. The more people that sign up in a given area, the faster they will get their installation. And once the installation happens residents can pay for fiber internet, but government buildings, libraries, and schools will get gigabit internet for free.Google Fiber being in your fiberhood doesn’t mean you automatically get it. You’ll have to pay for a plan (more on that later) and you’ll also have to pay for a last-mile fiber installation. This will run the fiber from the street to your home and get the fiber box installed. The one-time fee for this will be $300.The devices and plansGoogle is entirely focus on Fiber being 1Gbps internet, but they will have a tiered plan system. One reason for this is because Google will also offer Fiber TV, a television service just like that offered by Verizon or any other ISP. Not everyone needs TV, so Google has a plan without it.Google announced three devices today as well, all of which will be necessary to run Google Fiber and Fiber TV in your home. They are…TV Box – A set-top box needed for each televisionStorage Box – Local storage and DVR, can record up to 8 shows at once, access as a wireless access pointNetwork Box – The modem/router with built-in firewall and WiFiGigabit internet and TV – $120/monthFor $120 a month subscribers will get Google’s premier plan. This will include the gigabit internet (up and down), 1TB of cloud storage on Google Drive, all three devices above, and a full television plan. The plan includes all major networks, hundreds of fiber (cable) channels, on-demands shows, and optional premium channels. Users will get a free Nexus 7 tablet as well!Right now Google is waiving the $300 installation fee is buyers sign a two-year agreement.Gigabit internet – $70/monthFor the very reasonable price of $70 a month Google is offering up 1Gbps internet, along with the network box and 1TB of cloud storage. Basically this is the no-TV option. The $300 installation fee will be waived with a one-year agreement.Broadband internet – Free (for up to 7 years)Not everyone can afford gigabit internet, but Google thinks everyone should have broadband. In order to get people up to speed they are offering a free 5Mbps down/1Mbps up internet for up to 7 years. Subscribers will just need to pay for installation, or $25 a month for the first year ($300).And that’s Fiber…That’s the basics of Google Fiber. It’s a hugely ambitious project, even if it is restricted to Kansas City, MO for now. Google is offering up the country’s fastest internet speeds (by a factor of 3) and doing it for cheap, while making a commitment to increasing internet speeds for everyone in the area, including government and other community services. We’ll see how it all plays out, but it’s quite exciting so far. There will be a public demonstration space for Fiber opening Saturday. Geek.com will have a full report of our visit.Google Fiber Network BoxGoogle Fiber Network BoxGoogle Fiber speedtestScreen Shot 2012-07-26 at 12.35.02 PMScreen Shot 2012-07-26 at 12.35.58 PMScreen Shot 2012-07-26 at 12.36.43 PMlast_img read more

Google Play Store to finally offer gift cards

first_imgThe Google Play Store has been missing something since the day it was announced: you have never been able to purchase with a gift card. When it was just apps it didn’t bother me as much, but as Google’s Play Store evolved into a digital content provider of all sorts the desire grew. Finally, in the version of the Play Store being rolled out right now, you will be able to redeem and spend Play Store gift cards. It had to happen soon. After all, the framework was in place when the Nexus 7 came out — everyone who bought a Nexus 7 was give a $25 credit to spend in the Play Store. After you spent that $25 though, you needed a credit card attached to your Wallet account to get you anywhere. Fortunately that all appears to be changing.Google has yet to make any official statement and it’s not like anyone is selling Google gift cards yet, but hidden in the new version of the Play Store lies the ability to enter in gift codes to be redeemed as cash on the Play Store. Presumably Google will be making an official announcement soon with more details. Unfortunately the link there for Terms and Conditions leads to a 404 page. (The page is http://play.google.com/about/card-terms.html.)Another feature that has been slipped into the Play Store is a Wishlist. Like with any other digital retailer, you can create a wishlist of apps or content that you would like. Right now, you can tap a check box that will add the item to a wishlist that only you can access. It would make sense for Google to make this list something that you can share with your friends and family, so that they can fulfill your wishlist as you fill it out. Most likely, that functionality will be there when the Play Store website is next updated.Gift cards are a big step forward for the Google Play Store, especially with devices like the $200 Nexus 7 that could be so easily given as gifts to children. The ability to give Google gift cards to anyone will help breed the same kind of ecosystem that Apple and Amazon have enjoyed for years with their digital content. It is a great step forward for the platform and its users.RedemRedemCardsFF WishlistWishlistScreenshot_2012-08-16-03-59-19-247×440last_img read more

Gran Turismo 6 gets PS3 box art November 28 release date from

first_imgWe’ve been hearing rumors that Gran Turismo 6 is a PS3 game since late February. And that rumor was reinforced last week when a listing for the game appeared on Newegg and has remained live. Now it seems another retailer has decided to give the game a listing along with provisional box art and a release date. The Newegg listing gave no details beyond the fact GT6 is a PS3 game, but Italian retailer multiplayer.com has gone a step further. They are stating the game will be released on November 28 and have also posted a picture of the box art you can see below. It is stated the art is not final, but if that’s what ends up being final art I don’t think anyone would be upset. If the November 28 release date is to be believed, that’s probably after the PlayStation 4 has launched, or at least in the same release window. That is surprising, but maybe Sony had little choice. The game can’t easily be ported to the PS4 due to the different hardware architectures, and developer Polyphony Digital is well known for shipping when a game is ready, not to a schedule that suits Sony.Gran Turismo 6 now looks set to be the last major game release for Sony’s current gen console. The GT series has always been a system seller and I can’t see that changing with GT6 even this late in the lifecycle. If anything it’s going to form a bit of a bargain for racing game fans–the best looking Gran Turismo yet on a console that Sony may bundle the game with for under $300.last_img read more

No arrests have been made.- Newcastle allegations -Meanwhile The Guardian said it had been approached by a former Newcastle United player, whose identity the newspaper did not reveal, alleging he had been the victim of abuse while at the northeast club. The ex-player has named George Ormond as the offender, claiming he was sexually abused by a man who has already had a six-year prison sentence for convictions involving boys from the club’s youth system over a 24-year period. Both Crewe, a club renowned for its youth development system, and Manchester City have opened investigations into Bennell’s links with their clubs.Crewe’s director of football Dario Gradi, the club’s manager between 1983 and 2007, said he knew nothing about Bennell’s behaviour until around 1994.“I would like to express sympathy to the victims of Barry Bennell not only at Crewe Alexandra, but at other clubs in the north west,” Gradi said in a statement.“The first I knew of Barry Bennell’s crimes was when he was arrested in the United States in 1994. I knew nothing of his crimes before this time when he was employed by us.”A brief statement issued by City to Britain’s Press Association said: “The club is aware of allegations that Barry Bennell had an association with Manchester City in the 1980s.“As a result the club is currently undertaking a thorough investigation of any past links he might have had with the organisation.”– © AFP 2016The42 is on Instagram! Michael Noonan refutes suggestion he acted inappropriately over Project Eagle sale

first_img Image: RollingNews.ie Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article http://jrnl.ie/3286576 Minister Michael Noonan 8,307 Views Mar 14th 2017, 1:20 PM THE MINISTER FOR Finance, Michael Noonan, has refuted the suggestion that he “acted inappropriately” with regard to an element of the sale of the Nama Northern Ireland loan book, known as Project Eagle. The Public Accounts Committee report into the sale of Project Eagle was published this afternoon and states that Nama lost €800 million in relation to the loan portfolio in four years. It declared that the sales strategy was “seriously deficient”.“Inappropriate”Noonan and Department of Finance officials held separate meetings with Cerberus representatives on the eve of the bid closing date.Project Eagle was sold to Cerberus, with the deal closing in June 2014.The committee said it considers that ”it was not procedurally appropriate for the Minister for Finance [Michael Noonan] to meet with senior Cerberus representatives the day before the Project Eagle bid closing date”. It said this could have given the perception that Cerberus was benefitting from preferential treatment. It also said that it considers that it was “not procedurally appropriate” for the Department of Finance officials to meet with Cerberus representatives in the days leading up to the Project Eagle bid closing date.Again, it said this could have given the perception that Cerberus was benefitting from preferential treatment.Timeline: The seismic controversy over the Project Eagle land sale as it unfolded from start to finishRefuting suggestionIn a statement, Noonan said that he refutes “absolutely the validity of any suggestion that I or my officials acted inappropriately in meeting with Cerberus in March 2014″.He said that both he and the Department of Finance “have at all times cooperated with the Committee and have provided a large amount of supporting documentation to the Committee”.Nama sold its Northern Ireland loanbook in June 2014 for £1,137m. A Comptroller and Auditor General examination had to be carried out because of the size of the sale and the recorded loss associated with it. The Pac considered the report and held 11 meetings to further examine what went wrong.Noonan said that he voluntarily appeared before the Committee for over five hours in October of last year, describing it as “a decision which was largely unprecedented”.“Following leaks of a draft PAC working document last month, I wrote to the Chair of the PAC highlighting my concerns surrounding the leaking of information and what appeared to be unfounded claims contained therein,” said Noonan in a statement.I note that my letter has been included with the report. It is disappointing that unjustified and unfounded views have made their way into the final iteration.” Short URL Minister Michael Noonan Image: RollingNews.ie 60 Comments Tuesday 14 Mar 2017, 1:20 PM By Aoife Barry Michael Noonan refutes suggestion he ‘acted inappropriately’ over Project Eagle sale Noonan met with senior Ceberus representatives on the eve of the bid closing date. Share Tweet Email I refute absolutely the validity of any suggestion that I or my officials acted inappropriately in meeting with Cerberus in March 2014. At no point was I or my officials invited to discuss this meeting at the PAC nor was the alleged impropriety of this meeting raised in follow-up correspondence. The note of the meeting with Cerberus is on the Department of Finance’s website and is clear in stating that any issue relating to NAMA should be raised directly with NAMA.He described it as “entirely appropriate” that he as Minister for Finance would meet with the chairperson of a major international investment fund, “a former US Secretary of the Treasury no less”, at his request whilst he was in Dublin on business. This is part of the job of a Minister for Finance. He also noted that when he appeared before the committee in October of last year, “much of the discussion revolved around whether I should have intervened to put an end to the Project Eagle sales process”.I welcome the fact that the PAC accepted my evidence regarding this issue, and in doing so has recognised the clear legal separation between the Minister for Finance and NAMA’s commercial operations. As I stated at the time, I as Minister had no role, and have no role in relation to individual transactions and I am pleased that the PAC report has not suggested otherwise. He said he will be reviewing the report over the coming days. The report will be debated in the Dáil next week and Noonan said he looks forward to making a full contribution to that debate.LetterNoonan wrote a letter to Pac chairman Sean Fleming in February of this year saying that he had read articles which mention a draft working paper on the committee’s findings. He took issue with what was reported to be in this draft working paper.“There appears to be a clear inference that the committee working paper contains draft conclusions… that both I and my officials acted inappropriately in meeting with Cerberus representatives in the days prior to the Project Eagle sale process closing,” he noted. He described the suggestions as “extremely damaging to both myself, as Minister, and to my officials”.I refute absolutely the validity of any such purported conclusions, regardless of whether or not they are ultimately included in the committee’s final report. He also said in the letter that the records of his and his officials’ evidence confirm that the meetings with Cerberus were not raised during the committee hearings. He said that if this was a substantive consideration for the PAC, they should have been invited to publicly state the factual position for the record. He said the meeting was arranged at the request of Cerberus and was “high level in nature” and that it would have been unusual for him not to meet with such “notable individuals and firms”.He said that his meetings with Cerberus in March 2014 didn’t alter the fact that “neither I nor my officials were involved in the Project Eagle sales process”.He said it was established that the Project Eagle process was underway, and that Cerberus did inform them at the meetings that they were interested in the portfolio. He also said that records relating to the meetings had previously been released under the Freedom of Information Act in November 2015. Noonan himself provided records relating to these meetings directly to the committee in his correspondence in November and December 2016.Read: Dáil committee inquiry concludes Nama lost €800 million on Project Eagle in four years>last_img read more

The Netherlands said stop to the wrong kind of populism Wilders set

first_imgNow of course it’s important to unite the country in the coming weeks and months and that we succeed in forming a stable government for the next four years.Relieved European leaders, fearing the rise of anti-EU sentiment in one of the bloc’s founding members, congratulated Rutte, now headed for a third term at the head of the one the eurozone’s largest economies. Geert Wilders Source: Peter DejongA spokesman for EU Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker hailed it as a “vote against extremists” while one senior European source told AFP on condition of anonymity: “Common sense strikes back.”Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault of France, where the far-right Marine Le Pen is currently seen winning the first round of the presidential election in April, congratulated Rutte for “stopping the rise of the far-right”.‘Not rid of me yet’ Wilders had pledged to close the borders to Muslim immigrants, shut mosques, ban sales of the Koran and leave the EU if he won the polls. He thanked his supporters in a message on Twitter, with his party set to boost its number of MPs to 19. The PVV won 15 seats in the 2012 elections, which had slipped to 12 in the outgoing parliament.“We won seats. The first gains are made. And Rutte is not rid of me yet,” he said.Eyeing weeks, if not months, of protracted coalition talks ahead, Wilders offered this morning to work with the new government.“I would still like to co-govern as the PVV, if possible. But if that doesn’t work … we’ll support the cabinet, where needed, on the issues that are important to us.” Mart Rutte Source: SIPA USA/PA ImagesMost of the other leaders, including Rutte have vowed not to work with Wilders, denouncing his incendiary rhetoric and his go-it-alone attitude.Turnout reached 81%, just shy of the record of 88% set in 1977.Rutte appeared to have benefited from his firm stance in a spiralling diplomatic spat with Turkey after authorities barred Turkish ministers from rallying support in the Netherlands for a referendum.‘No Trumpian force’ Assuming the exit polls reflect the final result, Rutte will get the first chance to form the next coalition and could possibly turn to the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and the Democracy party D66, which both matched Wilders with a predicted 19 seats. But with the three parties’ combined total of 70 seats, he would need another party to reach the 76-seat majority. The “PVV is not such a revolutionary, Trumpian force,” Leiden University expert Geerten Waling told AFP.“People stick to responsible politicians mostly,” he said, acknowledging though that the PVV’s showing was “not small”.The analyst also pointed to the “disastrous” showing of the traditional Labour party, Rutte’s sole partner in the outgoing coalition.Support for the party appears to have evaporated and the partial count showed it winning just nine seats – well down from the 38 it won in 2012.Labour leader Lodewijk Asscher told supporters late yesterday “the voters have spoken, difficult as it is, but that is democracy”.One of the biggest winners of the day was the young, charismatic Jesse Klaver, leader of the ecologist leftwing GroenLinks. In a remarkable turnaround, the party is likely to win 16 seats compared to just four in the outgoing parliament.© – AFP 2017Read: Measures to trap suspected paedophiles among far-reaching powers in new Dutch cybercrime bill >Read: This teddy is being reunited with its owner after being left behind at Cork Airport > By AFP Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article 109 Comments Thursday 16 Mar 2017, 6:58 AM http://jrnl.ie/3290624 DUTCH PRIME MINISTER Mark Rutte has easily defeated a strong challenge by far-right rival Geert Wilders in key elections seen as a bellwether of populist support in Europe, according to partial vote counts. With more than 54% of votes counted, Rutte’s Liberal VVD party was set to win 32 seats, making it the largest in the new 150-seat parliament, with Wilders and his Freedom Party (PVV) beaten into second place alongside two others on 19 seats, the Dutch news agency ANP said.Millions of Dutch flocked to the polls in a near-record turnout, with the stakes high in an election pitting the pro-European Rutte against his anti-immigration and anti-EU rival.Following last year’s shock Brexit referendum and Donald Trump’s victory in the US, the Dutch vote was being closely scrutinised as a gauge of the rise of populism on the continent ahead of crucial elections in France and Germany.“This was the evening when The Netherlands, after Brexit and the American elections, said ‘stop’ to the wrong kind of populism,” Rutte told cheering supporters.center_img Mar 16th 2017, 6:58 AM ‘The Netherlands said ‘stop’ to the wrong kind of populism’: Wilders set to be defeated in election PM Mark Rutte easily defeated a strong challenge from the far-right Geert Wilders. 17,942 Views Share Tweet Email1 Short URLlast_img read more

It makes you proud to see The 10th year of the Global

first_img Saturday 16 Mar 2019, 4:00 PM By Stephen McDermott Victoria Falls, one of hundreds of locations that will take part in this year’s Global Greening initiative https://jrnl.ie/4543104 15 Comments Image: Tourism Ireland Mar 16th 2019, 4:01 PM Share515 Tweet Email3 center_img ON THE SURFACE, a leopard statue in Kenya, a DC-3 plane in Hong Kong, and a street-skating event in Paris don’t have all that much in common. If the group wasn’t bizarre enough already, it also includes a competition Finland, in which entrepreneurs stand waist-deep in the freezing Baltic Sea while pitching ideas to potential investors, Dragons’ Den style. But they’re not randomly connected: each is linked by this year’s Global Greening, an initiative that sees locations and events around the world lit up green during the St Patrick’s period.Over the years, the initiative has seen the likes of the Sydney Opera House, the London Eye and Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil daubed in green light to promote Ireland. So how did it all come about?“Like a lot of great things, it kind of happened in a couple of different places independently,” Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland – which co-ordinates the initiatve every year – tells TheJournal.ie.“Rodney Walshe arranged for the Sky Tower in Auckland in New Zealand to be lit up green for St Patrick’s Day in 2009.“Then the following year, a lady called Órla Saul who was in our Sydney office and a lady called Donna Campbell made a local approach to have the Sydney Opera House lit up.“It was so terrific when we saw the pictures afterwards… and I started to show it at various meetings around Ireland, where it got a huge emotional impact.“You could feel the sense of inspiration in the room. Year after year it started to grow and capture the imagination at home.” The Intercontinental Hotel in Abu Dhabi, which is taking part in this year’s Global Greening initiative Source: Tourism IrelandThis year, 425 sites in 53 different countries are set to take part, in what’s expected to be the biggest year for the initiative to date.Famous buildings and sites in the likes of London, Paris, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi, and Rio di Janeiro are among those that will go green this year. And as can be expected when such a wide range of locations take part, a huge effort is involved in getting some of them over the line.“You can’t take it for granted when you have something happen one year that it’ll happen the following year, and that you can come back every time,” Gibbons explains.“There’s a very Irish approach to it, in that we’re really relying on a number of people to help us.“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade came on board, and we would never have got places like the Great Wall of China over the line if it wasn’t for the ambassador there.“It’s the same in places like Mexico or Argentina, where Tourism Ireland wouldn’t have a presence. It can take years in terms of asking diplomatically.” Optus Stadium in Perth, Australia is another location joining the Global Greening this year Source: Tourism IrelandSometimes, Irish history plays a part too.“If you look at the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, for example, we had to run that by the Archbishop of Rio di Janeiro,” Gibbons says.“The pitch that got that over the line was the work that Irish missionaries did in Brazil over 100 years ago. That was nothing to do with tourism at all, but it’s all part of it.”The mammoth effort goes into the ‘greening’ of so many locations around the world every year has proven almost invaluable.Gibbons illustrates the value of the initiative when describing how a 30-second NBC television segment on the station’s nightly news ran coast to coast a number of years ago.“If I was to buy an ad for that long on NBC, it would have cost me $2.5 million, so it’s priceless in terms of its PR value.”Ultimately though, the success of the initiative is a testament to how keeping things simple can often work best.“People identify green with Ireland,” Gibbons jokes. “If you take the likes of France or the UK, where the flags are red, white and blue, you’ve got three colours.“The practicality for us is great!” ‘It makes you proud to see’: The 10th year of the Global Greening takes place this week – here’s how it started The annual initiative will take place in more than 50 countries this year. Here’s the family’s story.(Irish American Civil War, approx 11 mins reading time)The family is not an easy one to trace in the 1860 census. The main reason for this is their listing under the name of O’Riley (which has been erroneously recorded as O’Kiley). On 21 June 1860 Charles was living in the First Ward of the City of Auburn, where he worked as a laborer. His wife Marcella was engaged in housework and looking after the couple’s four children- 15-year-old Anthony, 12-year-old Mary, 6-year-old Ann and 4-year-old Charles. A ten-year old girl, Catherine Doyle, also lived with the family. Both Charles and Marcella had been born in Ireland, but had emigrated to the United States before the mid-1840s, as all their children had been born in New York. Another son, James, would follow in 1861. 3. What happened to Claudia?Claudia Lawrence went missing 10 years ago. Its better than your child coming home in a hearse Family campaign

first_img Wednesday 27 Mar 2019, 5:21 PM ‘It’s better than your child coming home in a hearse’: Family campaign after daughter killed in car crash “I honestly expected that we’d go out to Tramore and she’d be sat on the kerb, maybe with a broken arm or a couple of bruises.” Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article Short URL By Conor McCrave 30 Comments 53,573 Views Share603 Tweet Email1 Image: RIP.ie Image: RIP.ie https://jrnl.ie/4563756 THE FATHER OF a 16-year-old girl killed in a road collision involving an unaccompanied learner driver has told of the devastating effect it has had on his family. Katie Murphy (16) died after the car being driven by Edward O’Shea, who was 17 at the time, crashed in Tramore, Co Waterford, two years ago. Yesterday, O’Shea, who is now 19, was handed a six-year driving ban and sentenced to 14 months in prison by Judge Eugene O’Kelly after pleading guilty to careless driving at Waterford Circuit Court. Speaking on Today with Sean O’Rourke on RTÉ Radio One, Katie’s father Hilary Murphy described the moment he received the call to say his daughter was in a car accident. He recalled his heartbreak at arriving at the scene to find paramedics unsuccessfully trying to resuscitate her. “We didn’t even realise she had left the house,” he explained. “I got a phone call from a lady who lives maybe 20 to 50 yards away from where the crash happened and she just said you better get out here quick, Katie has been involved in an accident and hung up.“I honestly expected that we’d go out to Tramore and she’d be sat on the kerb, maybe with a broken arm or a couple of bruises. The Fire Brigade guys had taken the roof off the car and they were taking her out on a board so we went over and had a look at Kate and pretty much realised that she was gone.“They took her into the ambulance and for some reason the back door of the ambulance flew open and I could see that she was being resuscitated inside the ambulance so at that stage I pretty much knew that she was gone.”Two other passengers in the car survived the collision but were left with permanent injuries, with one suffering several broken bones and another being placed into a medically induced coma. In the minutes leading up to the crash, Katie reportedly uploaded videos onto social media site Snapchat where the passengers were heard saying “that the car was being driven over the speed limit”.One passenger of the modified Japanese import said, “Basically we’re going to be killed in this car and somebody in the front said ‘yeah we probably are’”, according to Murphy. In his sentencing, as reported by the Irish Times, Judge O’Kelly said “some young men, particularly young men treat the public roads like some form of private racetrack”.AftermathSince the collision occurred a number of measures have been taken to improve visibility and prevent further collisions along the same road. “It’s along the cliff outside Tramore. Some people might know the Gillameens, it’s a swimming area and it’s a very twisty road,” Murphy told O’Rourke today. “Since the accident they’ve put in lighting along the whole stretch, they’ve put in speed bumps the whole way out – but unfortunately that’s no good to us.“There was a number of witnesses living along the road who spoke of the terror when they heard the car coming at such speed. At least two of them jumped up and said ‘Oh my God, there’s going to be an accident’… And went outside straight away and as soon as they got out, the car was against the wall.”Katie’s family has started a campaign to deter young drivers from speeding and to warn passengers to get out of a car if the driver breaks the speed limit. The campaign is called Odd Socks for Katie because one of her friends started wearing odd socks in her honour since Katie died.“The message behind it is if you are in a car that is being driven dangerously just tell the driver to stop, get out of the car, phone your parents and get them to take you home,” Murphy said. “Any parent will come out and collect the child, they might be upset about being disturbed or whatever but it’s much better than your child coming home in a hearse.“We basically try to empower children to have the courage to say stop let me out,” he said. Murphy said he and his wife were both burdened by the huge loss in their lives since Katie’s death and added that her siblings, especially her younger brother Scott, were heartbroken. “They were very, very close and Scott would be a quieter guy, and Katie was such a fun-loving person. If she saw him lying on his bed playing video games or whatever she would literally come in and dive on top of him to make him laugh and get him out.“It’s a big loss to Scott because she was a lifeline, I suppose,” he said.  Mar 27th 2019, 5:21 PM last_img read more

Varadkar to meet Merkel and Macron as Brexit uncertainty ticks on

first_img 42 Comments By Christina Finn These two meetings reflect the deep and warm relations Ireland enjoys with both France and Germany, including the support shown to Ireland during the Brexit negotiations. I will again express the Government’s gratitude for their continuing solidarity. We will take stock of the latest developments on Brexit when we meet, efforts to secure ratification of the Withdrawal Agreement and No Deal planning.‘Strengthening relations’ While the Taoiseach said he meets with both the President and Chancellor at the European Council in Brussels, these bilateral meetings are an “important opportunity for an in-depth and one-to-one exchange on how to further strengthen our relations away from the bustle of the European Council”.Pressure mounting? While the Irish government maintains these meetings are about showing solidarity, there have been reports that Merkel is piling on the pressure over Ireland’s no-deal Brexit plans. The Taoiseach has denied this, but has admitted there will have to be “difficult discussions” with the European Commission in the event of a disorderly Brexit.Varadkar said that he was “not under any pressure from Chancellor Merkel or anybody else from this issue”.“What Chancellor Merkel or President Macron would do is ask reasonable questions.”The protection of the Single Market has been flagged as one of the talking points during the bilateral meetings next week. Speaking about the issue last week, Varadkar said the idea of protecting the single market “isn’t some nasty EU regulation”.“It’s our single market. We do need to protect it,” he said, adding: There’ll be consequences to it but it’s not going to be a hard border, physical infrastructure, checks. It’s not going to be that. When asked about the speculation that Merkel is mounting pressure on the Irish government, and could use next week’s visit to state that the danger that the backstop insistence could result in hard border, a government spokesperson said they “wouldn’t take that seriously”, adding that such notions are largely coming from British voices. As Brexit uncertainty ticks on, all eyes will be on the Taoiseach to reiterate the Irish government’s standpoint that the withdrawal agreement, including the backstop, cannot be reopened.  Mar 29th 2019, 11:23 AM Friday 29 Mar 2019, 11:23 AM Varadkar to meet Merkel and Macron as Brexit uncertainty ticks on The Taoiseach will travel to Paris on Tuesday to meet Macron, while on Thursday, Merkel will travel to Dublin. TAOISEACH LEO VARADKAR will have two very important meetings with French President, Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel next week. The Taoiseach will travel to Paris on Tuesday to meet Macron, while on Thursday, Merkel will travel to Dublin. The two meetings come at a key point in Brexit, where questions hang over what route Westminster will choose to take. Today, the House of Commons will debate and vote on Theresa May’s Brexit deal for a third time.Varadkar’s meetings with Macron and Merkel will focus on current EU issues in particular latest developments on Brexit, with the Irish government stating that such important bilateral meetings being held at this time is “reassuring from an Irish perspective” and “shows solidarity with Ireland during these uncertain times”. It is understood the discussions will centre on Brexit, with Ireland standing firm that the withdrawal agreement is not up for renegotiation. No-deal scenario The Taoiseach is also expected to give his views on both a deal and no-deal outcomes, with a particular focus during the discussions on a post-Brexit scenario. There will also be talks on the Single Market, the EU Commission and the European budget. In a statement announcing the meetings, the Department of An Taoiseach said: https://jrnl.ie/4566708 last_img read more

Tony Mokbel hearing continues

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Mokbel pleaded guilty on April 18 and sought several adjournments to prepare plea material. But in September, in an unrelated case, it was indicated that some affidavits had not been sworn in by police when getting search warrants and the practice might have been prevalent. The judge in that case then ruled out evidence that had come from the unsworn affidavits. Notorious crime boss Tony Mokbel pleaded guilty earlier this week over major drug trafficking offences in April. Upon hearing the development of the unrelated case, Mokbel then decided to try and plead not guilty, on the basis that his evidence may have been tainted, when it was revealed that police had neglected to swear on some affidavits, which were used to get search warrants. It is unknown whether the practice was involved in warrants used to get evidence against Mokbel. Mokbel’s barrister Peter Faris QC said if this had occurred in his client’s case it would justify his change of plea. The court were informed on Thursday that it is expected to hear from every officer who swore an affidavit to gather evidence against Mokbel in three drug operations. Prosecutor Peter Kidd said there were 20 officers who swore affidavits in the Mokbel cases and that statements would be gathered from all of them. The prosecution argued that even if some evidence is excluded, there would still be a strong case against Mokbel. The hearing continues this week.last_img read more
